Effective intelligence-chasing doesn’t usually feel like a staircase, or a step-ladder. What happens in classrooms is largely nonsense. It is a rocket launch. It is a matter of explosive leaps, linear, mutual acceleration, crisis, escape velocity: shock… and then, at last, awe. The -real- shock and awe comes not in war, but in insight.
