Revolution is a luxury whose incalculable costs cannot be paid. In fact, there is no remaining ‘budget’ at all. The living beings of earth, all of them, now exist in an environmental situation where the effect of each action is magnified a billionfold, because we are on (over actually) the brink of unrecoverable ecological catastrophe. Revolutions are far too expensive, in terms of lives, futures, and intelligence. Our peoples and ecologies need something better. Fast.
And what do I think that is? Well, a different word could help us here. It seems a mere editorial convenience, I know, but it isn’t. Because we can do something really shocking with extremely simple ideas… and this power increases when we use these to replace ideas so dangerous that we cannot even really understand their consequences until it is too late.
What is my idea? Invitation. Revolutions can be the outcome of an invitation, rather than a war, a protest or a conflict. And people like to get invitations, especially to roles and opportunities that restore their sense of justice, truth, humanity, ecological balance, and hope. I think that, all over the world, people can respond -together- to invitations… whereas revolutions are sort of private. We need a revolution -all together-… and for that we might need something more basic, more humane… something that children and mothers … families… grandparents… everyone can relate with, contribute to, and enjoy the fruits of.
And frankly? That sounds more like invitation than revolution, don’t you think?
