One thing I really like about Derren Brown’s book ‘Confessions of a Conjuror’ (and there are many things to like; get the hardback, it actually smells like books from childhood, and I suspect this is on purpose; it also looks suspiciously like a giant deck of cards, which I know is intentional)… is that he will often split the page in 10ths, and write extended dissertations in the footnotes as if his subconscious mind was derailing his conscious mind in order to get it birdwalking all over nearby tangents. As this is a habit I recognize from my own dear fingers, I find it (as much of the book is) unexpectedly charming. And revealing. It’s a win, this book. All the way through. Especially when this guy who is, literally, a force of nature, reveals his prissy, deeply human, and incredibly empathic underside. A lot deeper than expected, and filled with wisdom for the one who can read the flow, rather than what it appears to be carrying…
