It is sobering and terrifying to realize that people belong to cults of identification, behavior, commerce, fashion or argument for a simple reason: it’s the only experience of anything even slightly resembling community they have access to. Indeed, without these fictional anchors around which we rally and for the sake of which we work and even celebrate… many of us will never know anything resembling meaningful participation in a collective… which is one of the most basic urges and necessities of our human birth.
But the question remains: why must we serve false gods or pretenses, when, near at hand, the answer lies clear and uncostumed by fictions: to become human we must first be true beyond all paradigm, and to belong, we must know the difference between a pretense and the living compass that spins and speaks within hearts unburdened by the lies our cultures spawn like curses.
