The mind can trace and invent gaps of incredible sophistication, and when it does, in inventing these intervals, it simultaneously invokes new ways and modes of crossing them. Machines are useless for this, and can neither invent nor cross such gaps. What they do instead, is simulate this. Narrowly, in forms that take their imperatives from function as defined rather than relations as they are.
