Let’s face it. If judgement or anything like that feels uncomfortable, you’re probably going to be a lot more comfortable, with some exceptions, around people and subcultures in which ‘difference’ or ‘uniqueness’ is invited, celebrated, rewarded and mutually nourishing.
Which contexts are those, exactly?
I have some answers in mind. But I would like to hear which subcultures you suspect would be ‘pro-difference’, and which others would be likely to be ‘normalizers’ — that is, to expect or demand norms — and desire to impose ‘universal standards’ in aspects of humanity where diversity is both obviously natural and clearly imperative to our health, intelligence, community and development.
