“Childhood is filled with the conflict between the real, the mythical, and adults offering assertions about reality that are at least as absurd as stuff in cartoons.
Ordinary kids were upset when they became confused about whether Santa was a myth or not. I sometimes wish I had been an ordinary kid for about a picosecond, just to see if I can do it. As for me, I never understood why they weren’t upset that their fairy godmother was a dude, that language was a bunch of lies, or that god lived in an ant.
As for Santa, it was obvious to me that it was a problem like religion. Santa was there, somewhere, but he was probably hiding in a mountain or a grapefruit or something. Don’t even get me started about Easter. No one even realizes those are supposed to be turtle eggs. And they would never understand why a rabbit is hiding them.”
