I was noticing today how being exposed to the news and social media has impressed upon many of us the role of newscasters. And I am struck by what a demeaning and dehumanizing role this can be… however natural it may be for us to share gossip and chatter. Yet we not born to purvey lists of events — we are creatures of feeling, relation and meaningful presence in relation — and, in the modern context, ‘sharing the news’ is, too often, a way of silencing our actual humanity and trivializing our roles and relationships — presuming we still have any.
